Halfway there

It's normal for me to emerge after the end of a semester and feel like I haven't even lifted my head up and looked around me for at least a month. As classes draw to a close, final assignments are due and there are exams to prepare for. The first semester of honours, being when the majority of the coursework requirement is addressed, has not been the same; it's been a good deal worse. Since my last post I've been hopping from one assignment to the next. The last week was spent studying for my final exam on Tuesday; the two weeks prior encompassed one exam, a mini-conference, and the due dates for no less than four assignments. Before that was another two assignments, a presentation, and the three assignments I mentioned last time. It's been a little busy.

I've been a little busy. A statement of the obvious, no doubt, but I could hardly post again as if nothing were different, as if I hadn't just had a month of silence. So this is what I've been up to.

Semester one is half over. Or so they would have us believe, it seems. The University of Sydney apparently places its mid-semester breaks according to the AVCC Common Weeks, the first of which is the week beginning Easter Monday. And with classes beginning on the 3rd of March, this means that this semester's mid-semester break falls between weeks 3 and 4 out of 13. The university clearly subscribes to a definition of 'mid' which, while certainly valid, is somewhat looser than I would have used.

My first week as an honours student is over. I felt like writing something about it, but I'm having trouble coming up with something to say. I don't want to write about what I'm doing yet; I thought I should probably first discuss with my supervisor what I can and can't say. Of course, the chances of my blog being discovered by someone well-placed to work on the idea themselves are fairly small, but I still don't want to be "scooped". So, what can I say?

It's been two weeks since I unveiled my new blog. Some noteworthy things happened in the first week; the second week, not so much. I could go into details about all the features I added and the changes I made, but it wouldn't be particularly interesting. In fact, about a week ago I started writing that very post and it was pretty dull, even for me. So I've scrapped it and I'm starting over. I promise to only mention the highlights of the week (which still sounds too grand a phrase for it).

I had been musing for some time about creating a website and blog, a place where I could write about my research, post copies of my publications, and share my projects. For a long time, these musings remained no more than idle contemplation, but then Smerity forced my hand by setting me up with some of his webspace, and work began. I have dubbed this project 'Argent' and both components are, at long last, live.
